Sittard-Geleen

In the centre of Limburg you will find the city of Sittard. The city is located in the narrowest part of Limburg with the German and Belgian borders only a stone’s throw away. Because of the this the connections to Sittard from Germany and Belgium are very well accessible from all directions. Sittard is located in the former mining region. This is why DSM is located in Sittard and is now seen as a symbol for the mining history.

If you feel like relaxing for the day and you’re walking through the centre of Sittard, you will soon find your way to the shopping street with an adjacent market square with lots of great bars. During the weekends you will find a lot of students here, particularly in Café Bloem which is a bar with regular live DJs. The bars are quite busy throughout the year but it’s especially  spectacular around Carnaval. The Carnaval associations in Sittard will do anything to make Sittard as red, yellow and green as they possibly can! Sittard has been a conservation area since 1972. Because of its Catholic history Sittard has five different churches that were established at various times in history within a very small radius.  The top of the churches is literally Saint Peter’s Church which towers above the province with its 80-meter high tower and has the highest tower in Limburg.

Old and new traditions are celebrated annually. One old, yet now modernised tradition is the annual fun fair that’s held several times a year on the market of Sittard. A new tradition is the annual Kennedy March which you can enjoy for a long time because the march is 80km long! But all these old and new traditions fit together perfectly nowadays and all this makes Sittard a fun and lovely city to visit!
