Roermond

Roermond is a charming, vibrant city, steeped in cultural history, with excellent shops, entertainment and cosy cafés and restaurants. Sit and relax at one of the pavement cafés and enjoy a Roermond speciality such as Christoffelbier (beer), Christoffeltaart or Cuypersgebak (types of cakes).

Culture

Roermond, which has been a cathedral city since 1559, offers plenty of visitor attractions, such as the monumental St. Christoffel Cathedral built in the 15th century, the 14th century  Carolus Chapel and the town hall, which dates back to 1399. Particularly unusual is the town hall’s carillon, which features a group of wooden figures at the top of the tower. On Munster Square you can see a statue of Pierre Cuypers, an important 19th century architect who was born and raised in the city. This same square is also home to the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Munsterkerk (Minster of Our Dear Lady), a Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. This building contains the mausoleum of Count Gerard van Gelre and his wife Margaretha van Brabant and is the oldest burial monument in Europe to feature an effigy of a married couple. Roermond plays host to a variety of cultural events throughout the year, such as the Bevrijdingsfestival (liberation festival), the Taptoe military marches, the Limburg Festival and the Sjommelmert flea market.

Nature

Its location on the banks of the Rivers Meuse, Roer and Swalm gives this city a highly centralised position in the Rhine-Meuse-North Euregion near to Germany and Belgium. As a result, Roermond is a fantastic starting point for hikes through the Meinweg National Park and the valleys of the Swalm, Leu and Roer rivers. The area naturally contains a plethora of cycle routes and its unique location in the “Maasplassen” Lake District means there are plenty of opportunities for water-based activities such as water sports and boat tours.

Shopping

Visit the many boutiques and shops in Roermond’s city centre or go bargain hunting at the Designer Outlet Centre. Larger-scale stores offering extensive assortments can be found at Roermond’s Retail Park and for those wanting to brighten up their living space, the House & Garden Boulevard is a shopper’s paradise.
