Since 1100 the Lord of Valkenburg and ‘s Gravenvoeren lived in the castle. For centuries the Lords, later barons of Wittem, ruled from the Geulvallei castle. During the Eighty Years’ War, Prince William of Orange conquered and inhabited the castle. Since 1958 the castle is used as a reputable hotel/restaurant.
