Less than 2 km from the train station in Schin op Geul two rare calcareous grasslands can be found, on the east slope of the Gerendal, Limburg’s most famous flower valley. Calcareous grassland typically contains a great variety of short and hardy plant species. The grasslands are very vulnerable and are therefore not accessible to the public - but can be viewed from the paved footpaths. The public can visit the sunny orchid garden in the valley where all the plants that also grow in the rest of the area can be found. This garden is located just behind the shed of Staatsbosbeheer (Dutch Forestry Commission).
