Script writer Cammarano and composer Donizetti took Sir Walter Scott’s famous ‘Gothic novel’ The bride of Lammermoor as the starting point for an opera about untamable passion. The main character is confronted with a forbidden love, a vendetta, a forced marriage and eventually falls prey to madness. The emphasis is on the vocal beauty from which this period of opera history owes its name: the bel-canto.
