For his adaptation of the ‘ballet of all ballets’, a story about love and deception, Rudi van Dantzig drew his inspiration from Tchaikovsky. Although Van Dantzig respected the surviving parts of the ‘standard version’, he opted for a less superficial, more human interpretation for the rest.
