The Streekmuseum tells about the culture and history of Valkenburg and its surroundings. Apart from the work by famous South Limburg artist Charles Eyck you can also enjoy exhibitions of regional contemporary art. You will learn how the marl, used for the building of many houses in Valkenburg, was obtained from the sea and why/how prehistoric flint axes were produced in South Limburg. Another topic is the Medieval days when the epicentre of power was located in the current ruins of Valkenburg. A part of the exhibition is dedicated to Valkenburg as nineteenth century tourist attraction, which was a consequence of the construction of the railroad from Maastricht.
