In 1910 the catacombs in the marl caves in Valkenburg were opened. They are a carefully detailed copy of the Roman catacombs, commissioned by Jan Diepen and supervised by architect Dr. Cuypers. They chose to copy the fourteen most beautiful parts of the most important Roman catacombs. You can now see a copy of an extensive underground network in Rome in Valkenburg in a relatively short amount of time. The passageways with burial niches and chambers, the underground architecture, and early-Christian painting and sculpture are a breathtaking copy of a centuries old underground Rome.
