We often think back nostalgically: the little bakery on the corner of the street known as Pie, the butcher where we would invariably get a slice of sausage, or the pharmacist who always told cock and bull stories when selling medicines. Shopkeepers and entrepreneurs are an essential part of the city. It often seems as if these characteristic shops have disappeared from city life. In Weert Antje van de Statie used to sell her vlaaien (typical Limburgian pastry) at the station. In Sittard Sjef Vink sold the meat made in his parents’ butchers store on his scooter. In Maastricht, there was pharmacy Geusgens, whose witty employees wouldn’t let you go before they had played a trick on you.
Centre Ceramique presents: Anders nog iets voor u?(can I serve you anything else). An exhibition about the history of the retail trade in Limburg. There are stories and objects of bakers, butchers, cobblers and other craftsmen from the Roman era in the province of Limburg. Meet medieval potters from Brunssum and Heerlen as well as the nineteenth- and twentieth-century clothing shops and cobblers like Schunck , Wolf & Hertzdahl and Durlinger. They all started off as small shops and later branched out in the whole of Limburg. Last but not least: the Italian ice-cream parlours Milano and la Veneziana and the fashionable boutique of Joep and Henny Groenteman, where dazzling fashion shows were held. A historical-cultural exhibition filled with stories, photos, illustrations and special archeological findings from the Limburgian ancient times.
