The love between Violetta, an acknowledged courtesan, and Alfredo, the son of a good family, is an impossible love, at least in the eyes of Alfredo's father. And the fact that Violetta drops her many lovers will not change anything. Rejected, it is illness that will make the end of her life a real ordeal.
