The entrance to the abbey of Val-Dieu is already impressive; you walk through a gate from the early Middle Ages and right away it will seem as if you travelled through time. The impressive abbey was founded in 1216 by monks from the Order of Cistercians who lived here until 2001. The abbey was built in local architectural style from that century and is situated in a picturesque location in the practically untouched part of Berwinne Valley in the Land of Herve. In addition to the seventeenth and eighteenth century architecture, the monastery is characterized by roman and gothic elements. You can visit the brewery, the barn, the stables and the water mill. During the tours of the monastery you will see how the monks used to live. On top of that you can purchase beer and cheese made at the monastery.
