In 1104, a young priest called Ailbertus van Antoing travelled with his two brothers to the land of Rode (Kerkrade/’s-Hertogenrade). They had left the monastery of Doornik, because they found the monastic discipline too soft. Adelbert, count of Saffenberg aan de Ahr and owner of the fortress of ‘s-Hertogenrade gave the priest a piece of land. On this ground, Ailbertus built a simple accommodation and a wooden chapel.
You can visit the beautiful abbey church every day. The abbey itself cannot be visited individually. You can make an appointment for group visits with the South Limburg Tourist Information Office (VVV Zuid-Limburg) on +31 (0)43 60 98 500.
