In the east of southern Limburg you will find the lovely city of Heerlen. In the past Heerlen was known for its many coal mines that were located in the entire south-eastern region of Limburg. You can still see traces of the mines in the current construction of Heerlen; the city consists of many separate centres with beautiful green zones in between – such as the forests Imstenradebos, and Aambos, and Terworm. You can enjoy the nature while you’re taking a walk, riding a bicycle or having a picnic in between the various water mills, castles, rivers and farms. So, whether you want to enjoy nature or just want to go to the city, anything is possible! This motto is true for the city and the surrounding but also for the citizens themselves. Because the people from Heerlen are nothing but welcoming and will make you feel completely at home. The city is full of energy with its lovely city centre full of great shops on various shopping streets and in various shopping centres. And just outside the city centre there is also a large furniture retail park where you can choose your entire interior in one location. Not many people that it is the largest furniture retail park in Europe! These days it’s easy to get to by train (get out at Heerlen Woonboulevard).

For those who love outdoor cafés, there are plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants to choose from in the city centre. The South-Limburg kitchen is after all Burgundian and tries very hard to keep it that way.

Heerlen is also a prominent city for Art & Culture. Visitors can check the program for Parkstad Limburg Theaters at all times to choose a great show/performance to see. In addition there are also various museums to visit such as the interactive Continium where you experience science yourself or the Thermenmuseum (Roman baths museum) and Hoensbroek Castle where you can just go back in time for a while.

Bezoekers kunnen het programma van Parkstad Limburg Theaters ten allen tijden bekijken om een leuke voorstelling uit te zoeken. Daarnaast zijn er verschillende musea om eens te bezoeken, zoals het interactieve Continium waar u wetenschap in de praktijk kunt ervaren of het Thermenmuseum en kasteel Hoensbroek waar u zich even helemaal terug in de tijd kunt voelen.
