Tongeren was established by the Romans and is the oldest city in Belgium. To defend the city, the Romans built a 6 metre high city wall with a total length of over 4,500 metres, reinforced by round towers at regular distances. On the outside, the wall was protected by deep moats. There were monumental archways at the entrances to the city. Most of the impressive wall was broken down in the Middle Ages, but the remains are definitely worth seeing. A path was created alongside the wall, for accessibility to the city. A beautiful walk through the history of Tongeren.
