During the previous century, Eisden was an important mining area and the consequences of mining activities are big. The original village of Eisden (which is now a part of the city of Maasmechelen) struggles with huge mine subsidence. The water in the Zuid-Willemsvaart remained at the usual level, but the village and the country surrounding it literally subsided. The disrupted soil hydrology caused seepages. The surroundings of the canal became a nature and recreation area. Among other things, the Kruinenpad was created as a result of the opening up of the area. You will have a beautiful view of the nature developments and the mine subsidence from this ‘path’, which is a 181 metre long and eleven-metre high steel construction in between de crowns of the trees,. The path starts at the bank of the canal 200 metres past the bridge in Eisden. It is accessible to both wheelchairs and prams.
