Hasselt
Hasselt is a small but lovely provincial capital where the history can easily be seen at every corner on the street. When you walk through the city you are surrounded by houses from the fourteenth, fifteenth or sixteenth century. Many of these lovely, small and historic housed were renovated back to their original style; it’s a great city to walk through!
If you want to do more than just stroll through the city, Hasselt is known for its more exclusive shops; the city of Hasselt does whatever it can to be the best shopping city in the region. For example, you can use the bus that goes back and forth between the station and the city centre for free making it very easy to get to the centre by public transport. Once you’re there you’ll be able to find anything because of the many street signs that are located on nearly every street. They also show the various museums in town because if you’re looking for an original museum, Hasselt is the place to be. Some examples of museums are the Parfum-o-theek (a perfume museum), the Hollywood Movie Museum and the National Gin Museum. And at the latter you can also enjoy a nice glass of gin.
If you want something else to drink after a great day of shopping, you should go the lovely market square which has a wide selection of cafés and bars. During the summer they’ll have great outdoor cafés and the atmosphere is amazing.
Of course, you don’t have to stay in the city; you can also easily go to Kiewit, a nature reserve, by using the free buses. Here you’ll be able have a nice rest while walking through 247 acres of green by taking one of the trails that are indicated on the sides of the paths.
There’s lots of fun to be had in this diverse city!
