Aachen

Aachen is an old city. The Celts were one of the first people to settle in this city, later followed by the Romans. This was mainly because of the many hot springs, which are still a big source of enjoyment and relaxation. A long and eventful history has put its mark on the city. Anyone who looks closely around them when walking through the picturesque inner city will make a true spiritual travel through time. The showpiece of this part of the city is the cathedral of Aachen. This world-famous building, which has been on the Unesco World Heritage List since 1978, has been towering over the city’s roofs for the past 1200 years.

Aachen is, however, also a young city. The RWTH in Aachen is one of the biggest and most traditional technical colleges of Europe and the FH Aachen is one of the biggest of its kind in Germany. You will also notice this from Aachen’s townscape, which is characterized by the many international students. The dynamic influence of these young people is not only clearly felt in the city’s many parks and other green areas, but also in the popular ‘ Pontviertel’  district and elsewhere.

Aachen is a lively city. Its inhabitants are real hedonists who immensely enjoy social gatherings.  That is why the old emperor’s city has countless restaurants, cafés and bars and every season has its share of big parties, such as the “Öcher Fastelovend” (carnival in Aachen), the CHIO, one of the world’s biggest horse riding competitions, the presentation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen, the Aachen September Special or the traditional Aachen Christmas Market, which can be found between the cathedral and the former town hall.
